Solutions for LAN Server Disappearing Act in Windows 10 Minecraft

3rd January 2022

Antivirus Software

One of the joys of Minecraft is the ability to play with friends and family on a local area network (LAN) server. However, for Windows 10 users, there can be frustrating instances when the LAN server seems to disappear, preventing you from connecting and enjoying a multiplayer experience. If you're experiencing this "disappearing act" issue in Minecraft, fear not! In this article, we will explore some solutions to help you overcome this problem and get back to crafting, exploring, and collaborating with your LAN companions.

  1. Check Network Settings:

The first step is to ensure that your network settings are properly configured. Make sure that all devices are connected to the same network, whether it's wired or wireless. Verify that your Windows 10 device has network discovery enabled, as this allows Minecraft to detect LAN servers. To do this, go to "Settings" > "Network & Internet" > "Ethernet" (or "Wi-Fi") > "Change adapter options" > right-click on your network adapter > "Properties" > ensure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is checked.

  2. Disable Windows Firewall or Add an Exception:

Windows Firewall may sometimes interfere with the connection to LAN servers. Temporarily disabling the firewall can help identify if it's causing the issue. Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Security" > "Firewall & network protection" > "Domain network" (or "Private network") > toggle the switch to turn off the firewall. If the LAN server appears after disabling the firewall, it's recommended to add an exception for Minecraft. Go to "Windows Security" > "Firewall & network protection" > "Allow an app through firewall" > click "Change settings" > scroll down and check "Minecraft" > click "OK" to save the changes.

  3. Check Antivirus Software:

Antivirus software can sometimes interfere with LAN connections. Check if your antivirus software has any features that might block Minecraft or LAN connections. Temporarily disabling the antivirus software or adding Minecraft as an exception can help determine if it's causing the issue. Consult your antivirus software's documentation or support resources for guidance on how to add exceptions.

  4. Use Direct Connect:

If the LAN server still doesn't appear, you can try connecting to the server using the "Direct Connect" option in Minecraft. Obtain the LAN server's IP address from the host computer by opening the Command Prompt and typing "ipconfig" (without quotes). Look for the IPv4 address under the network adapter being used. In Minecraft, select "Multiplayer" > "Direct Connect" > enter the IP address followed by the server port (usually 25565) > click "Join Server" to connect directly.

  5. Update Java and Minecraft:

Outdated versions of Java or Minecraft can sometimes cause issues with LAN servers. Ensure that you have the latest versions installed. Visit the official Java website (https://www.java.com) to download and install the latest version of Java. For Minecraft, open the Minecraft Launcher, click on "Installations," select the Minecraft version you're using, and ensure that it's up to date.

  6. Restart Modem/Router:

Sometimes, network devices can encounter temporary glitches or conflicts that prevent proper LAN server detection. Try restarting your modem and router to refresh the network connection. Power off both devices, wait for a few seconds, and then power them back on. Once they've restarted, launch Minecraft and check if the LAN server appears.

  7. Use a Virtual LAN (VLAN) Software:

If none of the above solutions work, you can try using virtual LAN (VLAN) software like Hamachi or ZeroTier. These applications create a virtual LAN network over the internet, allowing you to play Minecraft with friends as if you were on the same local network. Consult the documentation or support resources for the VLAN software you choose to understand how to set it up and connect with your friends.

By following these solutions, you should be able to resolve the issue of LAN servers disappearing in Windows 10 Minecraft. Remember to ensure that your network settings are properly configured, firewall and antivirus software are not interfering, and you have the latest versions of Java and Minecraft installed. If all else fails, consider using VLAN software for a virtual LAN experience. Now, gather your friends, enter the Minecraft world, and let the collaborative adventures continue!
